Charles's bitter cup

rr he Prince of Wales is becoming known for a slightly eccentric other- worldliness. He is said to be very interested in homeopathy and unusual diets. He is also, of course, a keen church- man, and makes a point of taking holy communion wherever he finds himself on his travels. Next month, the Prince and Princess. visit Rome. It seems that the preparations have been greatly compli- cated by the Prince's wish for communion. Not content with a visit to the Anglican church in Rome, he apparently demanded that he attend mass in St Peter's itself. Efforts were made to fob him off with benediction or some less controversial ser- vice; but in the end, it seems, diplomacy won the day, and Buckingham Palace says that the Prince will not be attending any services in St Peter's. If the Prince really imagined that he could have got away with such a visit, it is very odd. The future Supreme Governor of the Church of Eng- land ought to know that if England still took its spiritual orders from St Peter's he would be no more than a dispossessed aristocrat sitting in Germany.
