A croak from the pond

Sir: As one of the frogs in the 'foyer' described by Michael Lewis ('Oh not to be in England', 23 May), I should welcome his suggestions on how to deal with members of the public (of any nationality), with or without CVs, walking in off the street seek- ing employment. I imagine in the US there is some sort of screening process. The American in question was treated with firmness and courtesy. The fact that he was American was irrelevant. It was Mr Lewis himself who emitted 'silent little shivers of horror' — from a next door room, to which he had retired and from which he finally emerged exclaiming, 'I feel almost embar- rassed to be an American.'
