Sir: Little can we add to the fact that the
sur- vivors of the International Brigades have come back to Spain on holidays. The ideal- ism of Stalin's foot-soldiers can also be beyond doubt, but I am amazed by Alfred Sherman's preposterous rewriting of Spanish history. He talks about today's Spain as the Republic's legacy, not Franco's innovation.
It is common knowledge that when Fran- co died, the 1978 Constitution was written to end any notion of victory or defeat in the civil war. Having some sense of history, all major parties considered then that the restoration of parliamentary monarchy was the best solution. Consider the real propor- tions: the Republic lasted six years; since Franco died, Spain has had more than 20 years of democracy and freedom as a kingdom.
