Since the beginning of July not a single German counter-attack

has succeeded in regaining and holding captured positions for more than a few hours. In some cases counter-attacks have not even been attempted. To conquer the moral of the German Army is a greater achievement even than the taking of Combles and Thiepval. The capture of those fortresses was, indeed, only a method of conquering the enemy's moral. The spirits of our men rise in exact proportion as the enemy's spirits fall.
