The new combined British and French offensive which has yielded

such splendid results on the Somme began on Monday after a long and terrific bombardment. On that day the British troops took the highly important positions of Morval and Les Bomb, command- ing nearly all the approaches to Comblea. The French occupied all Rancourt and captured 114gicourt. The Germans suffered terribly, and our own losses, though of course heavy, were light as losses are measured in this war. There was a curious change in the character of the wounds. Most of our men suffered from shell wounds, as in the early stages of the war. Evidently the German machine-gun fire which was so intense and so well managed in July is being " got under." This fact tells its own tale about the spirits and confidence of the enemy.
