Hovercraft

Sir: I would like to advise anyone thinking of travelling by hovercraft to think again, following my own alarming experience three weeks ago at the start of my holiday. Hoverspeed (rather inaptly named in this case) sent the hovercraft I was travell- ing in out in a force nine gale. Five miles out from Dover the craft ground to a halt, having been hit extremely violently by what the Captain described as 'a severe wave impact'. This resulted in quite serious damage to the hovercraft, and the terrify- ing of all its passengers. We were then forced to limp back to port, where on arrival a lot of very unsympathetic ground crew told us to get on another hovercraft, which they assured us would be quite safe. I was none too keen on this idea so opted for the ferry. We heard later that all hovercraft flights had been suspended owing to rough weather. As a result I missed my train connection to Milan and was forced to drive all the way to Italy.
