Can't Cope

Sir: Am I alone in finding Wendy Cope's repeated references to her inability to operate her television set and its associated video recorder tiresome in the extreme? Surely not.

What next? Book reviewers who boast of their inability to read or say that they are unable to write a review because the book emerged from its bag upside down?

If Miss Cope has nothing to say about television and wishes to present herself as a silly little woman adrift in a technical world, then that is her business. But why should the rest of us suffer?

If television is worth reviewing, then it follows that it is worth reviewing properly. If, as I suspect, it is your view that it isn't really a serious art form worthy of review then why not just drop the column altogether and leave Wendy Cope to get on with her needlepoint or whatever gentle- woman's pursuit it is in which she considers herself competent?
