The ear of God

Sir: The answer to the question posed by H. Mayer Brown and reported by Peter Phillips (Arts, 13 March) concerning the `point' of elaborate polyphonic church music in acoustically inadequate settings is that the audience is not the congregation, but God, and He would presumably not be bothered by poor acoustics.
