We regret to record the fact that on Monday afternoon
King Christian of Denmark died suddenly from heart failure in his eighty-eighth year, after a reign of more than forty-two years. No European Monarch was more popular in this country, and the sympathy of the nation will be with our Queen in her great loss. He began his reign in the stormy days of the Schleswig-Holstein dispute, when Denmark was at variance with her powerful Southern neighbour, but he lived to see long years of peace abroad and prosperity at home, and his family connected with all the non-Roman Catholic thrones of Europe. One daughter is Queen of England, another is Dowager-Empress of Russia; one son is King of the Hellenes ; and a grandson is the new King of Norway. No Monarch in recent times has seen so many thrones filled by his children. In his own country, where he was greatly loved, he will be deeply mourned. In Copenhagen on Tuesday his death and the succession of his eldest son as King Frederick VIIL were publicly announced by the Prime Minister, and the new King issued a proclama- tion declaring his intention to maintain the Constitution and preserve the rights of the people.
