An extensive and svetematiie course of frauds upon the Excise de- partment has recently been discovered by Mr. Golding Bird, the General Examiniog Surveyor. of Excise. The system was well known many veins ago, but was checked by the precautions of so executing and aifixing the stamp to reams or bundles of paper as. to preclude their removal tvithout being broken and rendered useless. It was known from circumstances that illicit pracocee were being carried on; and
Mr. Bird, after a persevering inquiry and search, has discovered that the true stamps, denoting the quality and weight of the paper, and that it had paid duty, had been ingeniously removed by some strong solu- tion, mid afterwards placed on paper which had not been du .y entered
or paid duty, m m
id sometimes es on inferior paper ; thus both defrauding the revenue and the fair dealer. Mr. Bird has traced one fraud to an extensive paper-stainer; and the whole subject is in course of investi- gatiou before the Excise Board, preliminary to the prosecution of the known parties.— Times.
There has been recently an issue of half sovereigns frem the Mint, but it is probaele that not any more of the same sort teal be issued. They are very little larger than the old sevemshilliog pieces, and, like then), liahle to be lost. lihty are of the same weight as the other half- sovereigns, but thieker, and do not sound when snuck on a counter ally mere than if they were pewter; which has caused many persons to hesitate in taking atm.—Daily PaptTs.
