Lectures on the Epistle to the Philippians. By Charles John
Vaughan, D.D., Vicar of Doncaster, 457c. (Macmillan.)—Dr. Vaughan's rare ex- cellence as a preacher is so universally acknowledged that it is not necessary for us to do more than record the appearance of a new vol- ume of sermons from his pen. In the present work Dr. Vaughan con- tinues the practice which he has already adopted on former occasions, of prefixing to each lecture a literal translation from the original Greek of -the paragraph which forms its subject. In doing this he expressly states that he wishes to imply no sort of disparagement of the author- ized version, which he regards as "a standard of taste, a model of language, and a specimen of dignified simplicity ;" and any reconstruc- tion of which would, he thinks, be attended with far more evil than good.
