America owes much to the fact that her rich men
believe in education. Mr. Rockefeller's Christmas gift of a hundred million dollars is the largest of its kind, but it is typical and in ne way exceptional. Mr. Rockefeller has given half the money to the General Education Board, to raise the salaries of the teachers in American Colleges and Universities. The other half goes to the Rockefeller Foundation, whose object is simply "the well- being of mankind " ; five million dollars have already been assigned by the Foundation for medical education in Canada. If the founder of the Oil Trust knows how to make money, he also knows how to spend it wisely. If our very rich men showed an equal interest in education, there would be no need for Oxford and Cambridge to sell their ancient liberties for a Treasury grant.
