A Guide to Scottish History, by Elizabeth Perry (Longmans), may
be described as Sir Walter Scott's Tales of a Grandfather put into the shape of a catechism. It would have been as well, perhaps, if the early kings, beginning with Fergus L, B.C. 330 had been omitted, or at least so noted as to make it understood that they have nothing to do with history. And, to come to more recent times, is it not a doubtful state- ment that Congall II. (A.D. 558) introduced "heraldic honours " ? Heraldry is a venerable science, but it scarcely claims such an antiquity as that.
