A General View of Positivism. Translated from the French of
Auguste Comte by J. H. Bridges. (Trubner and Co.)—This is an excellent translation of what, with all the admiration and respect which
M. Comte commands, can only be called a wild dream. The worship of the principle of humanity as exemplified in the woman is something to which man will not easily be brought by philosophical discoursing, and the scheme for governing the world by a Positivist Council is quite sublime in its extravagance. Mr. Comte, however, was always a French- man, and he was not above the weakness of giving France more mem- bers in his council than say other nation.
