The Church Year and Kalendar. By John Dowden, D.D. (Cam-
bridge University Press. 4s. net.)—In this book, which belongs to the series of "Cambridge Handbooks of Liturgical Study," we have some of the latest work of the lamented Bishop of Edin- burgh. It is full of interest for all who concern themselves in these matters and, indeed, to the students of theology generally. Let such look at Chapter V.: " Festivals:of St. Mary the Virgin." How significant the sentence, "The Church of Rome does not appear to have observed any festival of the Virgin before the seventh century." Much of the book is more or less technical, but it is a comment on the Kalemlar which should be found highly useful.
