The Chopin Society
Sir: As someone connected with the Chopin Society since its inception, I was surprised that you published the letter (17 February) from Elma Dangerfield, director of the Byron Society, on the Chopin anniversary Guildhall concert debacle. The Chopin Society was admittedly drawn into her slipstream. But to suggest that it 'presented' the concert is a perversion of the truth. Meanwhile, Lord Lytton has honourably but unhappily resigned. At the recent annual meeting of the Chopin Society an encomium on Mrs Swiatek, its foundersecretary, was pronounced by one of its Polish members and accepted with enthusiastic applause. The society has nothing to be ashamed of. Only poor Chopin must have turned quietly in his grave. Perhaps he may now be permitted to rest in peace.
