Sir: I don't know whether it is pique at lacking
the moneyed American relatives of Churchill, Macmillan, Hailsham, Channon and Hilary Benn that makes your paper sound anti-American. Pace Alan Watkins (Diary, 26 April), it can hardly be plebeian antecedents, since the editor, political cor- respondent and literary editor of the Spec- tator are all three Old Etonians and the nephews or greatnephew of baronets.
Nor indeed do I mind the tone of your editorials over the last fortnight. What I do object to is your allowing John Mortimer to make the very grave charge he does against President Reagan in your 26 April issue: 'President Reagan ordered his F-111 bombers to. . . go out and kill Libyan families (my emphasis). You and he should either substantiate it or print an apology.
