Facts and People
Stories of Courage Cleodie Mackinnon (ouP, Oxford Children's Reference Library, 21s). Inspiring tales of moral steadfastness and physi- cal endurance, told concisely but clearly. Span: Socrates to Astronaut Alan Shepard.
People of the Bible Cecil Northcott (Lutter- worth 21s). An unusual book about the Bible or children because it is a commentary on and introduction to the Scriptures rather than an imaginative retelling of the stories of famous Biblical characters. With the aid of Denis Wrigley's arresting decorations, it suc- ceeds admirably in stimulating the reader's in- terest in the Bible itself.
The Story of London Town Kenneth Allen (Odhams 15s). Though not altogether well planned, this book is valuable for the fascinat- ing bits of information it contains—about place names, for instance.
Brockharnpton Picture Reference Series (Brockhampton Press 3s 6d each). Wonderfully inexpensive picture supplements to any junior encyclopaedia: hundreds of line drawings and photographs illustrate historical and scientific subjects. To hand: The Tudors; Aircraft.
Handshadows to be Thrown Upon the Wall Henry Bursill (Dover 18s). First published for the amusement of Fanny by gaslight, this fac- simile edition should give Danny by flash- light some innocent entertainment.
