Chess no. 359

PHILIDOR

White

11 men 9 men L. Loschinski (2nd prize, Przepiorka Memorial Tourney, 1949). White to play and mate in three moves; solution next week.

Solution to No. 358 (Ellerman): Q - R 6, threat Kt -Kt 1. 1 R x P; 2 Q - K B 6. 1 R -B 5;

2 Kt-Kt 5. 1 . . . R-K 5. 2 QxP. I . . R-Q 4; 2 Q-B 4. I . . R-Q 3; 2 P - Kt 5. P - Q 7; 2 Kt - K 2. 1 . B - R 7; 2 Kt x B. Elegant set of mates following black rook moves. The following amusing game won the brilliancy prize in a recent Swiss tournament. As can happen in games of this kind, the loser was generous in his, help and the whole game is amusing rather than profound—but one can't really blame the winner for this, can one?

White, Goldberger. Black, Klein. Opening, Ruy Lopez. (Biel, 1967.)

1 P - K 4 P - K 4 2 Kt -- 1( 13 3 Kt - Q B 3 3 B - Kt 5 P - Q R 3 4 B - R 4 B - B 4 50-0 Q - K 2 6 P - B 3 P - Q Kt 4 7 B - Kt 3 P - Q 3. The opening now resembles the Q - K 2 defence in the Glut= Piano with the difference that Black's queen's side pawns have advanced, which (a) creates a weakness but (b) gives a square on Q Kt 2 for the bishop. I should like the position to be goitd for Black but suspect gloomily that it favours White.

8 P - Q 4 B - Kt 3 9 P x P? .. White now starts a completely mis- guided attack which never looks like succeeding. 9 P -Q R 4 (or perhaps 9 B Q 5, B - Kt 2; 10 P -Q R 4) Li the obvious and correct way of continuing.

P x P 10 Q - Q 5? B - Kt 2 11 Kt - Kt 5? . . with a series of hammer blows White destroys his own position.

11 . . . Kt - Q I! Naturally.

bad ten thousand men; he marched them up to tha top of the hill and he marched them down again.'

13 . . . - K B 3

14 Kt - Q 2 Kt - K 3. Threatening Kt - B 4; I think that 15 B x Kt would be the least bad reply,

15 B - B 2 P -Kt 41 Threatening P - Kt 5 winning the knight.

16 K - R 1 P K Kt 5 17 Kt - K Kt 1 Kt -B 5

18 Q - Kt 3 P - K R 4! The black pawns are devastat- ing: White is now menaced by the loss 01 the queen by P- R 5.
