Sir: Alastair Forbes's letter (20 August) sug- gests a competition as to who can write the greatest number 'of successive longest sentences without using the word 'and'. Mr Forbes would be an odds-on winner. He managed only six in a whole column of the Spectator. While the last sentence was mer- cifully concise and consisted of eight words, the others average over 100 words each. Bernard Levin could be asked to judge. He also likes long sentences.
