Abortion on demand
Sir: Christopher Hitchens writes (The US election, 21 July): The Democrats have declared themselves opposed to what they keep calling Social Darwinism.' Yet on the question of abortion they represent the more extreme advocates of Social Darwin- ism. Particularly as practised in the United States, abortion kills disproportionately more of the poor and the black.
Gerry Ferraro may wear a 'Catholic' label but she is unlikely to attract the more thoughtful Catholic voters with her support for abortion on demand. Many more may wonder whether they could trust a political schizophrenic who claims to believe in private that embryos are fully human from the moment of conception but in public connives in their wholesale destruction.
