The History of Modern Europe. By Thomas Bullock. (Simpkin and
Marshall.)—Mr. Bullock, who is already well known as the author of several educational works, has in the present instance undertaken the rather serious task of compressing into little more than 800 12mo. pages the entire history of Europe, from the end of the fifteenth century to the present time. It is a mere impossibility that a work of this kind should, under any circumstances, be pleasant reading, and we are in- clined to advise Mr. Bullock at once to abandon the alight anticipations which he appears to entertain on this point. As far as we can judge, however, the volume is carefully compiled, and, as a school-book, may very likely be useful.
