Spooky

Sir: David Shayler (and you) might be amused by my true tale of a morning in the life of a prospective naval attache.

Part of the training attaches get involves both MI5 and MI6, and one morning we were told that we were due to have several presentations and briefings at a location south of the river in London. I knew where it was, and as I lived in a flat in Stockwell I suggested that I just walk the couple of miles and roll up at whatever time was appropriate. No, no, this wouldn't do; I was told that, as the location was confidential, I must come up to the Metropole building (near Charing Cross) and be bussed, with the other trainee attaches, to our meeting- place. They didn't black out the windows of the bus, which surprised me.

Need I add that David Shayler's article (`Let me be heard', 20 June) rings very true? Hilary Foxworthy
