Nicholas Moore still active.
Sir: Your reviewer Francis King is wrong twice over in his assertion (7 May) that Nicholas Moore's only comeback since the early postwar period has been a reissue of his collection The Glass Tower. On the one hand, it was supposed to be reissued but has not been. (Tambimuttu, when is the book coming out?) On the other hand, Moore has been writing a great deal over the Past twenty-five years and some of his poetrY (though not enough) has been published, ia three books: Identity: Poems, Ca.deriza Press, 1969; Resolution and IdentitY, Covent Garden Press, 1970; and Spieen (thirty-one versions of Baudelaire's poem)' The Menard Press/Black Suede Boot Press, 1973.
The Spleen poems' started life as I multiple heteronymous entry tor th, Sunday Times translation competition all" . were highly praised by the judge, Professor G. Steiner (Geneva). Furthermore, the book was well received in the Spectator 1/?; Jeremy H. Prynne. Lastly, Bernaru, Bergonzi has written an excellent critical appreciation of Morre's work in the 51' James Encyclopaedia of Contemp0r0 Poets (second edition). Nicholas Moore may have `withdrasva from the literary stage' but hedid not With. draw from literature. The two are sale,' times compatible. They are never identica'. Anthony Rudolf
