Swedenborg

Sir: I was sorry to read George Galt! disrespectful reference to Em311'e Swedenborg (Notebook, 28 May). ;ad Swedenborg was a distingioThfic eighteenth-century scientist and Pu'of servant, a member of the Swedish Housegot Nobles. Later in life he wrote, as 'a ser,11-ejs' of the Lord', an extensive series 0f d1

inspired theological works, notably Arcana Caelestia and The True Christian Religion. This Society, which is devoted to the translation and publication of Swedenborg's

works, has recently completed a new Latin edition of the eight-volume Arcana

Caelestia and is currently engaged, with

American co-operation, on a new English translation.

The revelations contained in these works constitute the doctrinal basis of the New Church organisatidns in various parts of the world, particularly Britain, the US and Africa. To many people these religious

beliefs make sense of life and are a source of inspiration relevant to everyday existence. Svvedenborg's remains were transferred in 1910 at the request of the Swedish government from London to Uppsala. The Revd R. R. Rogers, speaking on the deck of ,the frigate used for this purpose, said, Swedenborg was great in science, greater in Philosophy, but .greatest of all as a theologican and an expositor of the Word of

God.' That, sir, is a more fitting comment than Mr Gale's.

Any of your readers who would be interested to learn more of Swedenborg and

his works are cordially invited to visit our Office, library and shop here in Bloomsbury, or to write to the Secretary for information. David F. C. Mann The of the Council,
