It is affirmed in Calcutta correspondence of the 23rd of
January that the local Government intend to propose to Sir Charles Wood a loan of 10,000,000/. sterling. Debts have been paid off, it is said, too rapidly, and the "balances" have sunk to 10,280,0001. against 16,818,000 in 1862. This is lass than three months' expen- diture, and certainly indicates that the Indian Treasury is sailing a little too close to the wind. Paying off debts at par in order to raise the same amounts next year is not very profitable finance.
