We • regret to record - the death :of Lord.Harcourt on
Friday, Februaey 24th,, at. the age- of ,fifty-nine. After leaving Etion he devoted himself. with rare abnegatioa to. the service, of his father, the late Sir William Harcourt, whom he assisted. -as secretary until his death in. 1904. Only then did he enter Parliament, but his intimate knowledge of politics brought him rapid promotion when the Liberals . came into -power. He was appointed- First Commissioner of :Works. in: the:Campbell- Bannernian.Ministry and made-hie:maiden speech as a Minister ; he woe:promoted in.I910• to the Chionial Office, returning to the Office.-of. Works in 1915 -and -retiring vitae:Mr. Asquith. He received his peerage in 1916. Since he left office, he had been the guiding spirit of the Independent Liberal party organ. ization. Lord Harcourt was an admirable Colonial Sleoretery, showing-' a 'real knowledge of4the Crown' Colonies and Protec- torates and a deep interest in-their progress.
