Two little volumes issued by Grant Richards (2s. net each),

one on Turner, by J. E. Phythian, and the other on Whistler, by F. Rutter, are both useful, and are sympathetic studies of the painters of whom they treat. Perhaps it would have been wiser to have laid less stress on the personality of Whistler, which is ephemeral, and to have concentrated on his works, which are for all time.
