Letters from Constantinople, of the 17th September, report a second
battle in which the Russians were defeated by the Gircassians. In the retreat from Daghestin' Corot Woronzoff's army was hotlyy pursued by Schamil, the Circassian .Abd-el-Bader. On reselling Jani-Ouchiyinam-gbe which-is tributary to Russia, the Count, thinking himself safe, halted to rest his exhausted troops. Scha- mil-suddenly-came-upon- the Russians; and it was net without a bloody struggle that Count Woronzoff effected` his retreat to a safer position. A hundred and eighty officers, including a General and three Aides-de-Camp, perished in the retreat! On 'the flying march from Daghestan, Count Woronoff is said to have lost, out of 50,000 men, 12,000 or 15,000; and the remainder of his army is dis- pirited and.cliscontented. After this last victory, Schamil ravaged the tributary province, and bore off to his mountains a great number of prisoners.
