Schweik plays host
Tomas Cernikowski, a Czech student who fled to Britain last month, made a series of trans- lations from the wall posters and underground newspapers published in Prague during the first few days of the Russian occupation.
The good soldier Schweik called upon Mr Brezhnev. 'How are you?' asked Schweik. 'Victory is ours,' Brezhnev replied. 'We have all the keys to the situation. One key in the Poles; another the East Germans; and two more the fraternal troops of Hungary and Bulgaria. We also have our transmitter.'
Schweik thought for a bit. 'I used to know a worthy housekeeper in Prague. She had a key for every door in her house : a great big bunch of keys, she had. Then one day she had to make a rush visit to the lavatory. Unfortunately by the time she'd found the right key it was too late.'
