Nowhere to be seen
Sir: A month or so ago an attempt to scut- tle a disused oil rig was frustrated by that well-known but nevertheless somewhat shadowy organisation, Greenpeace, amidst much media hype, echoes of which reached even these shores. Some weeks ago a medi- um-sized oil carrier sustained major dam- age when attempting to enter harbour in Launceston, Tasmania, during bad weather. This damage was subsequently judged irreparable by her owners, the BHP Com- pany. Last night, on the local television sta- tion, I witnessed a somewhat amateurish attempt to sink her, 60 nautical miles off the Tasmanian coast. As well as her cargo of manganese ore, she was also reported to contain some 70 tonnes of fuel oil. There was no sign of Greenpeace, or anyone else. Do I sense a double standard?
