From Dr Netta M Goldsmith Sir: During the ten years
that I lived in the United States, I came to like Americans for the following reasons: 1. They are direct. They have an instinct for the most straightforward and, therefore, efficient way of doing something.
2. They are more honest than some other nationalities. You do not have to spend time wondering whom to bribe in their organisations, in the hope of not paying taxes, or to get a permit for something.
3. Contrary to the popular view, they are not materialistic, but engagingly idealistic and romantic.
4. They have a vibrant language. I noticed this even as a child watching their films, and still recall my delight at hearing one gang- ster menace a minion with 'You can't eat corncob with no front teeth!'
Lastly, they are very hospitable and far kinder to Brits than some of us deserve. Netta Goldsmith
