After the Cyclone

SIR,—While deeply sympathising with the victims of the recent Ceylon cyclone, having lived in the country and known Trincomalee, I find Professor Malalasekera's appeal for aid (your issue of January 8) couched in somewhat strange terms. He humbly invokes 'old ties of affection.' Does he not realise that Mrs. Bandaranaikc's government, with its draconian laws and irredentist attitudes, has for some years done its worst to sever all bonds of affection with those Britons who formerly loved Lanka?

Professor Malalasekera also states that 'Lord Louis' was in Ceylon for many years. As a former officer on his staff at SEAC, I would put Lord Mountbatten's stay at Kandy at little more than two and a half years.
