The real danger

HRougetnont ere's some very bad news in order to start the new year without any illusions. Throughout history, barbarous warriors wearing funny headgear have more often than not wiped the floor with sedentary, civilised folk. Worse, homogeneous ethnic states with funny customs (like stoning homosexuals and adulterers to death) have more often than not made mincemeat out of sprawling, multi-ethnic ones. Finally, warrior societies rattling spears and shouting slogans have more often than not scared the daylights out of people watching television and drinking Diet Pepsi.
'Hedonism boasts no martyrs,' writes Joe Sobran, but for once I disagree with my old buddy. Very similar questions arose during the Thirties, when warrior societies in Germany and Japan (the Italians tried, but were taken seriously as singers and lovers, not fighters) sneered at the mongrelised democracies. According to Victor Davis Hanson. the West usually wins against all sorts of towelheads, bikini-wearers and other exotically attired perverts because Western armies use freemen, not mercenaries or slaves. Hanson's book Why the West Has Won is the good news. (Noel Malcolm reviewing the book proposed that the title should read Why the West Has Usually Won. Which it has.) Although Sparta (warrior state) beat Athens (civilised society) and Macedonia under Philip and Alexander won the final victory over the Greek states, Alexander turned out to be a philosopher king who happened also to be a warrior. Under Alexander, the known world became civilised, and only his premature death prevented him from accomplishing his great scheme of converting the backward towels into civilised people by exchanging Eastern and Western populations.
Had the greatest-king-ever lived, perhaps a one-eyed mullah with a Captain Hook claw for a right hand would not be sitting pretty in a London mosque preaching how to murder innocent Westerners. His ancestors would have joined the Greek race long ago, although in his case I doubt it. (It's very difficult to civilise a half-man/halfwarthog creature.) Which brings me to the point I wish to make in this my first column of 2002: Chasing after the Taleban halfway around the world — something we needless to say had to do — will have no effect on the scabs who represent the real threat to America and Europe. The scabs in our midst are the real and present danger, and the quicker we deal with them, the better off we'll be. But don't get your hopes up, dear readers. It is no longer possible to speak the truth either in Europe or in America if a preferred minority finds the truth to be offensive. This is the only space where you will find, say, a cockroach like Abu Harnza described as just that. The rest of the media and those who rule us will block any effort to deal with the terrorists among us in fear of offending multiculturalists, deconstructionists, postmodernists, feminists and other such scowling walletlifters. As a result only the innocent among us will pay the ultimate price.
Flying by private plane to Palm Beach a couple of months ago, I was hardly searched. I don't need to elaborate as to why I wasn't, Flying over to Switzerland, however, on a commercial flight, I was given the once-over three times by some tawny chappies who could hardly speak English — or any known language — and they were bloody rude to boot. When I suggested they should be racially profiling themselves, all hell broke loose. In a multiculturalist society such as ours, racial profiling is equivalent to murder, and then some. Alice in Wonderland was never like this. The spectacle of non-US citizens and persons of Middle Eastern and Sub-Continental origin searching blue-eyed mothers carrying babies has to have Satan bent over with glee. The political elite, of course, has no such problems. Dependent on minority interest groups, it will block any effort to deal with the terrorists among us. The Islamic Fifth Column in America and Europe rules OK.
But back to some good news. The true value of diversity lies not in mutually suspicious cultures like ours, but in the ability of our natural aristocracy — our military, our scientists, our nuclear engineers — to be left to do their job without interference from PC busybodies and feminists. 'The West has been good at winning wars, because it has been good at other things of even greater importance.' Our key values and strengths should be allowed to go forth, and to hell with multiculturalism and political correctness, 'You're either with us or against us' should be the slogan in the war against terror, and if anyone doesn't like it, there is always Kabul and Kandahar. And also Karachi. To all of you, a happy 2002.
