On Tuesday took place a memorable meeting of the Committee
of Imperial Defence. It included, besides the Prime Minister, three ex-Premiers, Lord Balfour, Mr. Asquith, and Mr. Lloyd George. It was summoned to consider the question of the Channel Tunnel. The incident is of no small constitutional importance. When vital problems connected with the safety of the Nation and the Empire are at stake party distinctions ceas..s. We are, and always have been, in favour of the Channel Tunnel scheme on its merits, business and commercial. We feel, however, that there is now a special reason for pressing the matter, i.e., unemployment. When man-power is running to waste in public or private concerns it is the time to carry out schemes in regard to which the immediate profit may seem doubtful but which will certainly be beneficial in the long run. The Channel Tunnel is of that nature.
