BROWN'S IS THE NEW BLACK

SIR ROCCO FORTE

Frequent travellers have been thin on the ground for the last few months so I thought this column should set an example by returning to The Spectator.

I today return to the London hotel scene with the purchase of Brown's Hotel in Mayfair. There is a sense of dej'a via about this. The old Forte company owned Brown's until Granada gobbled up the company only to spit out Brown's (and the rest of the assets) in their break-up of a fine business.

Brown's was sold to Raffles, who have now sold it back to me and my bank manager at Bank of Scotland. It needs tender loving care, which will be administered by the existing team with help from the other Rocco Forte hotels. Then it deserves a facelift. My sister Olga is preparing to do her magic.

In the meantime, I would like to invite you to stay at Brown's and see how we are getting on. Of course, my bank manager expects me to charge you. But I can offer you the special price of £130 per person per night for bed, breakfast and the famous Brown's afternoon tea. More details are in the Classified Section. Or why don't you drop by for lunch or dinner?
