Thursday, June 3rd, was King George's fiftieth birthday. The heart
of the nation goes out to him in gratitude for the fine spirit he has shown throughout Chewer and in good hopes for his and the nation's future. But though the nation is proud of the King and of the dignity and sincerity of his attitude, we doubt very much whether it realizes how terrible for him has been the ordeal of war. We all in greater or lesser degree have had losses among blood relations and friends. For the King the war has literally meant a daily loss. It is part of a King's duty to know a very large number of people. Further, the King's friends are naturally largely among soldiers and sailors and their fathers, mothers, and brothers. Hence it happens that every casualty list means a personal sorrow for the Sovereign.
