INTRODUCING MISS STELLA BENSON - [To the Editor of the

SeEcrAvon.1 Sue,—Your reviewer (I regret to discover) finds my introduc- tion to Miss Stella Benson's " Christmas Formtda " pompou,s, surmising that "surely the audience at which the Furnival books areaimed can be trusted to have heard of Miss Benson and to know something about her." Frankly, I should have hoPed so, but when, as quite recently, one discovered so eminent a literary personage as Mr. Hugh Walpole in effect hailing Miss Benson as a new "young writer" whose Tobit Transplanted "has only one or two predecessors,"* confidence seemed scarcely justified. Mr. Walpole's evident lack of know- ledge was at any rate directly responsible for the biographical and bibliographical aspects of my introduction, and if these seemed to offer your reviewer.needless information, he should remember there are apparently others unfortunately less well Lima Everyman, November 12th, 1981.1
