What liberty now?
From Mr John Gibbs Sir: Jack Straw (Jack of all tirades', 28 April) says that he 'can't see why someone wouldn't sign [the Commission for Race Equality document]. It struck me as uncontroversial.' Perhaps he and the members of the Commission would sign an equally uncontroversial document declaring that they will refrain from beating their spouses during the election. Maybe the most significant achievement of the race-relations industry is its having put an end to the notion of free speech. Mill's concept was unconditional. Our politicians might well occupy themselves during their next free recess reading On Liberty.
