Lord Kylsant
Sir: In his otherwise enjoyable review of Norman Lewis's autobiography Jackdaw Cake (Books, 28 September), Auberon Waugh makes rather heavy weather over the non-existence of a 'Lord Kilsant' (sic). Surely this is simply a case of the author (or the printer) erroneously substituting an T for a 'y'? For if there was not indeed a Lord Kilsant, there was certainly a Lord Kyl- sant. Sir Owen Cosby Phillips, first (and last) Lord Kylsant (1863-1937), was a Welsh shipping magnate and minor politi- cian whose career ended unfortunately with a term of imprisonment which he suffered through infringing company law in what he felt to be the best interests of his shareholders. Lord Kylsant's nephew, the present Lord Milford, rejected capital- ism to become the only Communist peer.
