HMC'S GUILT

THE Head Masters' Conference has been told that the education that its members provide is too specialised. The news value of this storm stands just higher than `Bishop Denies Literal Truth of Scripture', yet the papers dutifully report it and the head masters and other educators are again made, such is their respect for 'the real world', to feel vaguely guilty. Yet how can they not know that it is nonsense to talk about children being forced to specialise at 15? Anyone who has ever had anything to do with children knows that 95 per cent of them know what they like and are good at even before they are 15, and are only too glad to be treated as grown-up enough at that age to jettison subjects that have often been nothing more but burdensome and tedious for years and to take a serious interest in three.
