Sir: I doubt whether the Victorians, or any- body, ever put trousers on piano legs (And another thing, 22 August). The story seems to spring from a 19th-century cartoon ridi- culing Anthony Comstock, the American purity and modesty campaigner — who also proposed skirts for male horses, perhaps more understandably, as those animals may stil alarm lady passers-by of a nervous dis- position.
