Treasury Lord
Sir: It is to be hoped that the chairman of Holborn Conservatives, whose letter from (strangely) a WI address appeared in the Daily Telegraph (March 22), will read the letter from his constituent, Mrs Gray, in your issue of March 23. If so, he will perhaps conclude that, far from despairing of finding a replacement for Mr Heath who could re-create real Conservatism in that now mis-named party, he need not look beyond South Eaton Place.
Before launching any "Powell for Premier" campaign, however, it might be well to consider the possibility of someone for that office under whom Mr Powell could perhaps better serve his country in the capacity of Chancellor. That person, for reasons given by the Holborn chairman, is unlikely to be found in the House of Commons; but why ignore the House of Lords?
A man who strikes one as having qualities of leadership that ought not to be allowed to go to waste is Lord Carrington.
