Sir: Re Paul Johnson's piece on the origins of the Rushdie affair (And another thing, 30 March), the world in general and Iran in particular would be happier places if Aya- tollah Khomeini could have appreciated Balzac, caviare and, most importantly, the significance of 1 April.
