The Morning Chronicle contains, in a second edition, a somewhat

un- expected announcement—

'We have just received an extraordinary express from Paris, bringing the important intelligence of M. Sauzet's election as President of the Chamber. Before the first scrutiny the numbers were—Sauzet, 210; Odillon Barrot, 131; Dufaure, 39; Dupin, 16; Berryer, 3. No candidate having the 'absolute majority' required, a second scrutiny was proceeded with, when the Ministerial candidate was elected by a majority of 25. This first defeat of the Opposition is regarded in Paris asof considerable importance."
