Banking on it

Sir: Christopher Fildes's satirical piece (City and Suburban, 9 July) on the inau- guration of the European Central Bank was a real classic.

It might interest you to know that our own dear South African Reserve Bank has recently inaugurated a vast, incredibly expensive building with a private lift for the Governor, ascending directly to Heaven. This, at a time when our local currency has devalued against the pound and other major currencies by 50 per cent. T'was ever thus.
