In recent years the circulation of The Spectator has grown fast. In 1984 it was just over 18,000. It now stands at more than 35,000.
I attribute a high proportion of this growth to your recommendation. As editor, I am constantly impressed by the loyalty of the readers and your very high level of interest in the magazine. Your enthusiasm for The Spectator is its best possible advertisement. It persuades many new readers to try the magazine, and when they do try it, they tend to stay with it.
So in our efforts to get the circulation even higher, and so secure still further the quality of the magazine, I naturally turn to you. I am writing to ask you to give us the names and addresses of friends who you think would enjoy The Spectator. (The form is attached opposite). Having received the names which you suggest, we shall write to them with details of the magazine and an introductory subscription offer.
My predecessor, Alexander Chancellor, once compared editing The Spectator to giving a good party. I propose to test this comparison. Later this year The Spectator will be 160 years old. We shall give a party at our offices in Doughty Street. Our regular contributors will be present. If two or more of the friends whom you recommend take out a subscription to The Spectator we shall invite you and them to join us for the celebration.
