Treatment of fear
Sir: Whose television set was Christopher Booker watching on Tuesday, 12 December when he saw a Man Alive 'inquiry into the problem of agoraphobia'? (Notebook, 16 December).
What I saw on my set was a programme which looked at a method of treatment for people who suffer from various apparently irrational fears. Or was it that Mr Booker wrote his piece before he'd seen the programme? Now that would be irrational. Tim Slessor Editor, Man Alive BBC Television London W14 Sir: So, Christopher Booker thinks agoraphobia is an 'absurd problem' and laughs at the idea of helping agoraphobes lead 'happy useful lives'. I cannot remember anything jarring on my nerves like that piece of brutal impertinence. Listen to me, Booker. Agoraphobia is an illness — a mental illness and not, like yours, a moral one.
