A glimmer of hope

Sir: If I renew my subscription the immedi- ate cause will have been Matthew Parris's article about the Prime Minister (`The case for John Major', 16/23 December). I have been appalled by the crass, senseless invec- tive, puerile insult and sneering contempt by your columnists about him in recent years. None of them has shown the smallest understanding of the difficulties of govern- ing Britain today and for the future. I very much hope The Spectator has turned over a new leaf. Otherwise adieu.
