Corporals to the rescue

Sir: Auberon Waugh offers a hostage to fortune in asking us last week to 'Take cover, as the non-commissioned officers take over' (Another voice, 30 December).

We read in his delightful autobiography that Cornet Waugh not only failed to take cover; he machine-gunned himself. Happi- ly, the non-commissioned Corporal Skinner and Corporal of Horse Chudleigh saved their officer and provided him with several good lines.
